How to Find a Tinnitus Provider

Do you know what to look for in a tinnitus provider? Here is a simple checklist we advise when looking for a tinnitus provider and practice as a whole:

  • Has the provider taken courses in managing tinnitus, such as the extensive course in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy with Dr. Pawel Jastreboff or a course through the Tinnitus Practitioners Association? This will give the provider a great background into the neurophysiological model of how tinnitus and other sounds work through your brain and why they linger.
  • Does the provider also treat sound sensitivity issues? Often times, sound sensitivity issues occur in patients with tinnitus or sometimes by themselves with normal hearing. It is not possible to treat tinnitus effectively if a sound sensitivity issue is present. In this case, sound sensitivity HAS to be reduced before tinnitus therapy can commence.
  • Is the practice a comprehensive medical practice or have referral sources needed for other medical issues that may affect tinnitus such as other ear, nose, and throat disorders, neurology, cardiology, psychology, physical therapy, and even chiropractic referrals for complementary medicine and treatments? This is important to have in place for the best care and success of your tinnitus and sound sensitivity.

Our providers at Advanced Otolaryngology and Audiology are trained in tinnitus and sound sensitivity issues and have been providing options for management and treatment for the past 17 years. We are dedicated to providing you with the BEST care and start with a comprehensive evaluation to look for hearing loss, sound sensitivity, tinnitus, and any other medical issues that may be related to what you are experiencing.

We urge you to consider the above and ALWAYS do your due diligence in selecting a provider and practice for your health needs!
